We’re ready to welcome you back to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for a summer of family fun!

And, we’ve got a series of events that are free with any valid ticket to the dockyard.

Ultimate Explorer ticket holders, you can make the most of all the events happening this summer, because you can return for as many visits as you like while your ticket is valid.

Dive into rich maritime history through storytelling, crafts and trails that run right up until 4 September.

Here’s what’s on across July, August and the start of September.

Billy, the Sailor King

Billy the Sailor King

Join us for the tales of Billy, the Sailor King at Her Majesty’s Service Exhibition at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard 12-3pm* every Saturday and Sunday from 23 July and up to and including the 4 September.

We’ll be spinning tall tales and exploring life at sea but through a very different perspective. Billy, the Sailor King was Britain’s only monarch who served in the Royal Navy!

Storytelling brings history to life and is an excellent way to discover more about our amazing collections, objects and people.

All ages are welcome to come and enjoy this event.

Monarchy Monday

Monarch monday

Monarchy Monday at The Mary Rose – try saying that five times in a row!

See England's most infamous monarch. Meet the legendary Tudor king, Henry VIII - just don’t marry him, we’ve heard terrible things!

He could be sauntering through the dockyard, checking up on his beloved Mary Rose, or ruling over the summer activities. Keep your eyes open on 25 July, 1, 8, 15 and 22 August between 11am-4pm - you don't want to miss him!

Medal Mania

Medal Mania returns from 23 July – 4 September 2022 during regular opening hours.

Lace up your comfy shoes and grab a trail map from the visitor centre on arrival.

It’s a great activity for an all day visit to the dockyard, spot the objects, learn their history and collect the stickers.

 Or, start it one day and use your Ultimate Explorer ticket to return and complete it another time.

The trail runs across three of the dockyard’s museums - National Museum of the Royal Navy, Royal Navy Submarine Museum and Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower. Visit all three to complete the mission.

To get across to the Gosport museums you can catch the waterbus that departs from the dockyard, check times on the board on arrival.

This activity is suitable for everyone but especially families with children aged 5- 11 years.

Tudor Gun Drills

Have you got what it take to be part of the Tudor Gun Crew? They’re looking for fast, strong and accurate crew mates for the Mary Rose. Cannon drills with the replica Tudor gun take place at midday on 26 – 28 July, 2 – 4 August, 9 – 11, 16 – 18, 23 – 25, 30 and 31 August 2022.

Head to the Mary Rose reception and they’ll direct you to the drill space.

Jubilee Make and Take

Use your imagination and Create a special Jubilee-inspired keepsake to take home with you.

Keep Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations going with this craft event happening from 23 July – 4 September 2022, during regular opening hours.

You’ll find this event at each of these dockyard locations - National Museum of the Royal Navy, Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower.

This activity is suitable for everyone but especially families with children aged 5-11 years.

Amazing Archaeology

 Amazing Archaelogy

Got a budding archaeologist at home? Bring them to the Mary Rose between 11am-3pm from 26 – 29 July 2022 to investigate mystery objects and explore life on board in 1545.

When the Mary Rose was discovered, archaeologists found all kinds of interesting objects, some of which are similar to ones we use today.

Learn how to identify the replica objects, and have a guess at how a Tudor sailor would have used them all while making your own Mary Rose model to take home.

Ship – Ship Hooray

It’s playtime! If you have a child under five, then this event is perfect for you. We’ve got creative play resources ready for your little ones to explore.

This event is running during our opening hours for the whole of the summer holidays, 23 July – 4 September 2022. Just head to Victory Gallery on arrival.

Please do not leave your child unattended, otherwise they’ll be drafted into the crew of HMS Warrior to help swab the decks!

Colourful Calligraphy

Be the envy of your crew and wow them with your calligraphy skills with this Tudor-style quill and ink workshop.

You’ll make a bookmark and learn some new creative skills to practice at home.

Head to the Mary Rose for this event between 11am-3pm on 2 – 5 and 23 – 26 August 2022.

Corgis Aboard!

What is that corgi up to? Hiding where? Chewing what? Listen to this mischievous four-legged friend as they adventure on the Royal Yacht!

Join us for storytelling every Saturday and Sunday between 12-3pm* from 23 July, up to and including 4 September 2022 at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum/

Tasty Tudors

Discover what food and drink was like onboard The Mary Rose between 11am and 3pm from 9 – 12 August 2022.

Having a well-fed crew is important to keep everyone fit for fighting. Find out what the crew would have eaten, make your own tankard and see exactly how much beer they drank per day. Could you join the crew?
 

Totally Tudor Games

Fun and games 16th century style between 11am-3pm on 16 and 18 August 2022 at The Mary Rose Museum.

What did the crew do for fun? Join us to try your hand at some of their favourite games, including Nine Men's Morris and Backgammon, both discovered on board the ship!

Meet the Jester

 Meet the jester

The Mary Rose’s Jester Devilstick Peat is a magician, juggler and all-around entertainer, who had to keep Henry VIII happy… or else!

Come and see him perform this summer and maybe learn a trick or two.

Japes with Devilstick Peat will be between 10am-5pm on 17 and 19 August 2022 at The Mary Rose Museum.

Awesome Archery

Hit the target this summer! Being an archer on the Mary Rose required a lot of practice and strength.

Tudors would learn archery from the age of 7. Test your skills at our 'Have A Go' archery event between 11am and 3pm from 29-31 August at The Mary Rose Museum.
