Portsmouth Historic Dockyard embraces ideas and innovation during Museum and Galleries Month
Inspirational ideas are to be the focus of attention at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in support of the national initiative Museum and Galleries Month taking place from 1st May – 31st May which has the theme of Ideas and Innovation.
Taking advantage of the Historic Dockyard’s vast heritage, visitors will have the opportunity to discover innovations from history that have helped to shape the world today.
Weekly at the Mary Rose Museum visitors can investigate Tudor medicine and how it compares to today, using replica artefacts used by the Barber Surgeon as well as discover the more gruesome reality of life on board the Mary Rose, a favourite of Henry VIII.
Innovation and change can be explored at the Royal Naval Museum through the new exhibition, Sea Your History: The 20th Century Royal Navy. Free talks are being offered, focusing on innovation and change in the 20th Century. These will be taking place on Wednesday 7, 14, 20, 28, May at 2pm. HMS Warrior 1860 was the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship powered by steam as well as sail and constructed of wrought iron. Every Wednesday in May from 11am – 2pm, a guided tour on board the ship will give visitors the chance to discover more about the ship’s innovative design and technology of its time and visitors are asked to reserve their place by telephoning 023 927 78609.
Every weekend in May, visitors will be able to test their skills of invention by taking part in a ‘scrapheap challenge’ on board HMS Warrior 1860.
On Tuesday 29 May HMS Victory will exploring the ingenious inventions and techniques used to make Victory a fighting man of war, which also includes craft activities.
Museums and Galleries Month is a national initiative that aims to encourage people to visit their local museums and galleries. It was first held in 2000 and each year Portsmouth Historic Dockyard join museums, galleries and arts organisations throughout the UK in supporting the scheme.
To take part in the Museum and Galleries Month activities, visitors are required to purchase an attraction ticket.
