FREE ENTRY TO SHIP
A Russian warship is visiting Portsmouth for four days during its return home from operations in the Gulf - and the public are invited on board on Sunday 26th August between 12 midday and 4pm. The ship will be free to visit via Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The anti-submarine destroyer RFS Vice Admiral Kulakov, which carried out anti-piracy patrols off Somalia, arrives at Portsmouth Naval Base on Friday 24th August and departs next Tuesday 28th August. During their visit, representatives from the ship will lay a wreath at the Arctic Convoy memorial in Portsmouth and the ship’s football team will take on counterparts from HMS Illustrious at HMS Temeraire.
RFS Vice Admiral Kulakov and its 300 crew are visiting Portsmouth at the invitation of the British government as a part of its programme of bilateral naval co-operation. This year reciprocal visits have been made by HMS York and patrol boats from University Royal Naval Units.
Lieutenant Commander John Webb, who is helping organise the visit, said: “We know that the ship’s company are looking forward to visiting Portsmouth and to sharing their experiences with Royal Navy personnel.”
Jacquie Shaw, Head of Communications and Operations at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, added: “Once again we are extremely grateful to Portsmouth Naval Base and the Royal Navy for allowing us the opportunity to showcase the world’s navy to our visitors, following on from the hugely successful visit by Amerigo Vespucci (Italian Navy) earlier in the month. Nowhere else in the world can you see the Royal Navy and foreign vessels past, present and future alongside each other, it really is a unique day out.”
Please note it is advised to wear sensible footwear when visiting the ship and there is no disabled access but the ship can be viewed from the jetty.
Last entry is 3.00pm with the ship closing at 4.00pm.
