Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Present ‘Dockyard At Dusk’
In the second event of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s ‘Dockyard at Dusk’ season, there will be another memorable night of Shakespeare in the exceptional surroundings of the world-famous HMS Victory, following great reviews from Much Ado About Nothing last month.
The magnificent Lord Chamberlain’s Men will be performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth, for one night only, on Thursday 23rd August.
The acclaimed all male production of Shakespeare’s devastating and gripping thriller: Macbeth will see the players tour some of the UK’s most beautiful and historic venues and they are thrilled to include Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for the first time this year. So they’d like to encourage everyone to enjoy the refreshments available to purchase on site, bring a picnic rug/seat, sit back and relax… but beware witches, traitors and murderers!
When the triumphant soldier Macbeth discovers he''s destined to be the next King of Scotland, he and Lady Macbeth decide to risk everything in a desperate attempt to gain the throne. Macbeth’s violent dream of power becomes a paranoid nightmare.
At only two hours Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest texts, but it contains some of his most famous lines, such as “Out damned spot- out I say”, “Double, double, toil and trouble.’ and ‘Is this a dagger I see before me? Macbeth’s ghostly apparitions, action-packed sword fights and blood-soaked conclusion are sure to get the heart racing!
Mark Puddle, the company’s founder and creative director, says Macbeth has everything; a tragic love story, a lust for power and a drunken porter as well as fights, ghosts and plenty of blood! “Macbeth has always been considered one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The contrast of a beautiful summer’s evening and Macbeth’s tragic tale is a perfect fit for such an iconic location.”
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men will follow the critical success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by bringing Macbeth to some of the most beautiful open-air venues in the country, offering audiences outside the capital the perfect opportunity to see Shakespeare’s plays performed to the very highest standards, in the way the Bard first envisioned them...with an all-male cast, traditional costume and Elizabethan song and dance.
Plus, the audience can join in the atmosphere with a visit to the medieval photo booth!

The triumphant finale to the ‘Dockyard at Dusk’ season will be The Royal Marines Association Concert Band (RMACB) on Saturday 25th August.
This is the first time the RMACB will be hosting a concert at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard alongside HMS Victory. The concert will include a "Last Night at the Prom''s" theme, together with a traditional Royal Marines finale featuring The Trafalgar Drummers. Songs throughout the show will be sung by the superb Margaret Threadgold (Soprano).
Notes for Editors:
Founded in 2004, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men Theatre Company is the modern incarnation of Shakespeare’s original troupe of the same name. Performing with an all-male cast, we aim to revive the traditions of Elizabethan theatre and to bring to life the greatest works of drama, as they would first have been performed.
