TRAFALGAR DAY CEREMONY 2007
The annual Trafalgar day ceremony onboard HMS Victory will be held at 0900 on Sunday 21st October. This will be the 202nd anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in which the British Royal Navy under Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson defeated the combined fleets of France and Spain.
The short ceremony will encompass readings and prayers followed by the laying of a laurel wreath at the spot where Nelson fell. Further wreathes will be laid on the orlop deck, where Nelson died, by the Second Sea Lord, a representative of the Commandant General Royal Marines and Victory's Commanding Officer.
Various representatives of the Naval service and Sea cadet organisation will be present at the ceremony.
In a break with normal tradition, the flag hoist of 'England expects that every man will do his duty' will be raised at 1100 on Friday 19th and hauled down at Sunset on the 21st. This extension of time over the normal one day is to enable weekend visitors to the Historic Dockyard to witness the signal.
