National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will once again be celebrating Armed Forces Day with a series of FREE events looking at the Armed Forces throughout the years from the Second World War to the present day, with a special focus on the 30th anniversary of the Falkland’s War and the opportunity to speak to veterans about their unique experiences.
The Victory arena will be transformed into a 1940s style street party, complete with cooking demonstrations of rationed recipes such as eggless fruitcake, mock crab sandwiches and spam, music from the glamorous Miss Marie and lindy hop dancing.
Setting the scene will be a variety of military vehicles and people dressed in 1940s style. Children’s Historical Interpreter ‘Abs’ will be getting everyone involved with interactive war re-enactments. Plus, for those who would like to join in with the spirit, Hair OTT will be styling hair on the day!
The Royal Navy Submarine Museum will be represented with veterans, games and a giant gun for visitors to explore! Creative visitors have the opportunity to carve their own warship out of wood. There will also be an interactive tent in which children will be encouraged to discover what’s in a ration pack and to dress up ‘service style’.
This will be a fun afternoon for all the family and a chance for visitors to show their support for the contribution made by all veterans. It is hoped that veterans, their families, serving personnel and visitors will join the staff at the National Museum of the Royal Navy to mark Armed Forces Day 2012 in great style.

Armed Forces Day is an annual national event – this year on Saturday, 30th June 2012.
It''s an opportunity to do two things. Firstly, to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty''s Armed Forces. Secondly, it gives the nation an opportunity to Show Your Support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.
Across the country people are getting involved: communities hold local events and business show their support.
