May 2012 Update
A New Event to Celebrate the Diamond Jubilee
2nd June – 3rd June 2012 – 10am-10pm
Dodgy and The Lightning Seeds are to headline the UK’s largest free vintage and music event, along with over 250 performers providing entertainment on four different stages and across the site, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard this summer. Never before has there been such an event in such an important location, which the Queen herself has visited on numerous occasions!
Victorious Vintage is a brand new event which will put Portsmouth firmly on the map. It will take place over the Jubilee Weekend on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of June 2012, to take advantage of the extra bank holiday and half-term.
An array of beautiful vintage stalls selling everything from frocks to collectables will set the scene as visitors enter the Historic Dockyard.
The Vintage Salon by LeKeux Events will be on hand for vintage make-overs, offering everything from victory rolls to perfect red lips from just £5 - because your beauty is their duty! Hamilton Studios will then be on-hand in their pop-up vintage boudoir to capture photos of the results (£10). Capital FM will also be on site giving manicures and giving out goodie bags.
Plus, as a reward to those who come turned out in their finest, the roaming Best Dressed team will be handing out prizes during the day.
Music will be a key theme of the event with a main headline act each evening, bands throughout the day on the main stage and a smaller acoustic stage – headliners include Dodgy and Mark Morriss from the Bluetones on Saturday and The Lightning Seeds, The Bog Rolling Stones and The Silver Beatles on Sunday, plus other well-known bands from the region across the weekend[i]. All this will be taking place with the unique backdrop of HMS Victory.
The laid back acoustic area will be set among traders from Southsea’s infamous Albert Road, with a range of delicious food, fake grass to chill out on and of course – deckchairs! Plus, the buskers area will see pre-booked acts entertain the crowds completely unplugged.
Boathouse No. 7 will play host to the fourth stage where Manic Stage Productions will be showcasing local performers including a Grease medley, an Abba medley, Frank and Dean tribute, swing music, a tea dance, superb vintage singers the Tremain Sisters, 40’s starlet Annie Andrews, the actress, pin-up, dancer and vocalist and a magic show by local magician Sean Boon. There will also be a vibrant decades fashion show.
As the event continues into the evening (5-10pm) Boathouse No. 7 will then be partying to the sounds of DJ duo “Hot Rats” playing retro vinyl. The Hot Rats are named after the Frank Zappa album due to their hugely eclectic collection of retro vinyl and are guaranteed to get people dancing with a complimentary mix of funk and rock and roll. They have played at various nights around Portsmouth over the years as well as producing records in the 1990s, one of which even got air play by John Peel.
‘Victorious Vintage’ is set to be fun for all the family and there will be a dedicated children’s area by HMS Victory open from 10am until 6pm with rides, trampolines, hook a duck, face painting, delicious snacks and a place to rest and get away from the hustle!
Memories will be invoked of the smell of popcorn, the taste of kisses on the back row and the involuntary tear-jerk moment as Action Stations Cinema will be showing timeless classics[ii] from 11am-10pm (an additional charge of £5).
For those wanting something more retro than vintage, why not relive teenage dreams of being immortal with the new Laser Quest at Action Stations that will stay open until 10pm each night (standard pricing applies, for details visit: www.actionstations.org/laser-quest).
Entry onto the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard site will be free from 10am-10pm (standard ticketing to attractions will still apply).
