Who Do YOU Think They Were?
With a vast number of TV programmes, websites and magazines specialising in genealogy it is no surprise that more and more people are asking the question – Who do you think they were? With that in mind, curators at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, on September 25th, are offering visitors the chance to find out about the different career paths of their naval ancestors, learn how to interpret information from their service certificates and discover what archive resources are available.
Experts from different archives and museums will be on hand to answer research questions and give tips on how to investigate their naval past further. The workshop is suitable for those getting started on family history research or those who have already traced information but wish to understand more.
The programme of the day is as follows:

11:20 Understanding naval service certificates – Mac McAloon, Naval Historical Branch, Ministry of Defence
12:05 Understanding Royal Marines and Submariners records* – Matthew Little, Archivist, Royal Marines Museum

*NB: Submariner’s records will be an overview only and specialist questions will be replied to in writing after the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, there will be the chance to ask questions to the speakers. Organisers ask that questions are submitted prior to the event, so if
there are several questions on a common theme they can be answered together. Please note that speakers will not able to review personal research during the session, but if time runs out and not all questions have been answered, they will be responded to in writing after the event.
