Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has been named by the British Travel Awards as on the shortlisted contenders for the Best UK Day Out Experience 2010, alongside other leading visitor attractions such as the National Trust, Alton Towers and the Eden Project.
At Portsmouth Historic Dockyard visitors can see world famous historic ships at the home of the Royal Navy. It is a unique attraction showcasing 800 years of naval history within working docks and historic buildings, where people are invited to go aboard Admiral Lord Nelson’s impressive flagship HMS Victory, the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured steam and sail warship - HMS Warrior 1860, and discover the breath-taking artefact collection with a trip back to Tudor life in the Mary Rose Museum, for the best day out in the South of England.
Portsmouth Harbour’s leading attraction also includes a vast array of galleries in the National Museum of the Royal Navy, the interactive and high-octane look at the today’s Royal Navy in Action Stations, and Harbour Tours trips around the naval base to see the ships in port.
Plus there are lots of things to keep the kids entertained, plenty of family events, school holiday activities, talks and exhibitions.
Robert Bruce, Managing Director of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard commented: “There's nowhere else in the country that you can see this great mix of naval attractions covering 800 years of history alongside modern day Royal Navy. It is a great day out for all the family and we are thrilled that the British Travel Awards have recognised us in this way.”
BTA’s chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “The British Travel Awards are widely considered to be the “Oscars” of the travel industry! It’s the largest awards programme in the UK created to reward travel companies and the winning accolade is the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the business of travel for the UK consumer.”
