Visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will do some travelling with a difference as they embark on a voyage through time during the school holidays this summer, from Saturday 24 July – Sunday 5 September.
The journey through the centuries includes Navy Days, taking place from Friday 30 July – Sunday 1 August and set to be one of the most popular events on the south coast during the season, giving an exciting insight into the present, past and future navy. Visitors can step aboard new Type 45 Destroyers – HMS Daring and HMS Dauntless – witness the RFA Argus, the Royal Navy’s smallest vessel HMS Gleaner, the French Navy’s patrol vessel FS Cormoran as well as thrilling naval displays, historical re-enactments and the world-class attractions of the Historic Dockyard.
During the school summer holidays visitors can start their journey in the 1500s to discover more about historical figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Henry VIII and a Tudor doctor at the Mary Rose Museum, making their way through time to learn about Victorian sailors and seaside holidays on board HMS Warrior 1860, handling objects used on board HMS Victory and bringing the journey to an end by learning about the aircraft carriers of the future at Action Stations.
The activities include free drop in workshops and activities that are free with a valid Historic Dockyard ticket.
Families can enjoy outside picnic areas within the backdrop of HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum or treat themselves to a light lunch or hot meal or event an ice cream at one of the restaurants and cafes within the Historic Dockyard, without the need to leave the site during their visit.
The Royal Marines School of Music will be performing at the Historic Dockyard during the summer period from approximately 1:30pm alongside the main entrance on the following dates: Tuesday 1 June, Friday 11 June, Wednesday 16 June, Tuesday 29 June, Tuesday 10 August, Wednesday 11 August and Thursday 12 August.
