News release issued: 1st June 2010

Visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard during half term can take part in family activities from Saturday 29 May - Sunday 6 June, giving them the ideal opportunity to spend quality time together in a week which also celebrates National Family Week.

Activities will have them testing their paddle power, enjoying a Tudor makeover and letting their imagination run wild, discovering pirates and mermaids along the way.

For the first time, visitors to HMS Warrior 1860 can test their paddle power by making their very own paddlewheel board and race from England to America with prizes to be won – (places are limited and this activity is for children aged 7-11 years). A dedicated family area can also be found where visitors can bring their young sailors for costumed role-play, toys, games and colouring sheets and a family trail that will help them to find out about the men who lived and worked on board the ship.

The Mary Rose Museum will be offering visitors the chance to step back in time to discover how they would look as a Tudor and take part in a mystery object quiz.

Fantasy ships, pirates and mermaids will be the theme at the National Museum of the Royal Navy where visitors can use their imagination to create weird and wonderful ships and go on a drawing sea odyssey adventure.

This year''s programme coincides with National Family Week, an annual celebration of family life aiming to highlight the importance of quality time together and promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. The initiative runs from Monday 31 May – Sunday 6 June and the Historic Dockyard are in full support.
