In support of Help for Heroes, Gill Shaw’s photographic exhibition is a thought-provoking and emotional record of experiences and traumas on the battlefield and at home, because Gill Shaw, celebrity photographer, is also Gill Shaw, the soldier’s mum.
Visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s Boathouse No.7 will have the opportunity to see how Gill’s skill and passion for photography, combined with the help of war heroes and celebrities, have resulted in an amazing and inspirational exhibition, highlighting the courage of the men and women wounded while serving in the Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Currently No.2 on the Tesco Best Seller list, The Hero Inside is the officially authorised fundraising book for Help for Heroes, the charity founded in 2007 to support servicemen and women wounded in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Gill Shaw says of The Hero Inside: “I, for one, know that we have the best Armed Forces in the world and I am truly inspired by the whole concept of heroism. My purpose in wanting to produce this book and subsequent exhibition is to show our war heroes in a positive light, in these negative times. "
Gill travelled 21,500 miles around the UK in only 4 months (running alongside her regular business) in order to capture the inspirational photos, and whenever the task seemed to be too daunting to complete, the inspirational stories from these courageous individuals spurred her on to a new level.
The Hero Inside is a touring exhibition of the photographs from the book, which shows wounded soldiers in a positive way, plus a selection of photos from events that were taking place for Help for Heroes.
