Around 160 local school scientists of the future have been enjoying a day out at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The Science Museum Outreach Team has visited the Historic Dockyard for a one-day science special event run jointly with staff from ACTION STATIONS and HMS Warrior 1860.
Pupils from Langrish Primary School, Ecchinswell 7 Sydmonton School, Peel Common Junior School, St Johns College Lower School and Solent Junior School started the day, by taking part in the Science Museum ‘Feel the Force’ show. This was a fast-paced action-packed extravaganza featuring Sir Isaac Newton and Phil the Stunt Frog, taking a closer look at the forces that shape our world.
Groups of pupils were then allocated one of three forces-based science workshops; ‘Hot Air Balloons’ from the Science Museum, ACTION STATIONS ‘Rocket Workshop’ or ‘Paddlewheels and Propellers’ from HMS Warrior 1860.
The day also included self-led discovery visits to both ACTION STATIONS and HMS Warrior 1860 to further explore forces in action, as well as viewing the many exhibits and simulators. The event was aimed towards KS2 pupils.
Jacquie Shaw, Head of Communications for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, commented “this is a great opportunity to promote Science amongst the young people in our region and with two of our fantastic attractions linking up with the Science Museum it’s the perfect way to show how fun the subject can be”.
