TV Historian champions Mary Rose bid for new museum

News release issued: 22nd May 2007

TV Historian Dr David Starkey has become a champion of the Mary Rose Trust and filmed a special fundraising DVD detailing why the 16th century ship and her collection of artefacts is so worthy of a new museum.

The call to action from Dr Starkey comes as the Trust comes close to submitting a renewed bid for £20 million to the Heritage Lottery Fund to co-locate the hull with the museum housing the artefacts.

Dr Starkey said “Olympics come and go.  They are transient, but the Mary Rose is unique.  It is more important than all but a handful of Grade I-listed buildings.  It is the only 16th Century warship on display anywhere in the world. On a scale of 1 to 10 it is 10*.” He continued: “That there is even a question hanging over this is a national scandal. The case for a new museum is not just strong, it is overwhelming.”
