News release issued: 27th February 2009

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a member of The Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) and this week ALVA has released  its members’ visitor figures for 2008 today, showing a general upward trend in the number of people visiting the country’s foremost museums, galleries, heritage sites, cathedrals, gardens, zoos and leisure parks.

We saw an overall increase of 10.2% on visitor numbers last year, recording just under 560,000 visitors and this includes the Meet Your Navy event.

The UK’s visitor attractions, including the Historic Dockyard, are gearing up to ensure that people who opt for a stay at home break will be offered unique experiences, family-friendly activities and good quality, added value packages. 86% of our visitors agree that our all-inclusive ticket is good or very good value, with 97% stating that they would make a return visit.

With value at home so much better than in Europe and the US, over 60% of attractions expect to maintain or increase visitor numbers in 2009.  Overseas visitors are also expected to give a boost to the economy, with nearly a third of attractions planning for an increase in international visitors this year.
