On 14 February 1537 King Henry VIII declared by Royal Charter that England would celebrate the date as St Valentine''s Day, thus demonstrating that in spite of marrying six women, divorcing two of them and beheading two more, he was at heart a true romantic.

 

Spread a little love on the streets of Portsmouth on Saturday 14th February (11am - 3.30pm) to celebrate Valentines Day. Using chalks leave a message on the pavements for your loved ones at the principal historic, shopping and public sites in the city. Sites include Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Guildhall Square, Gunwharf Quays and Commercial Road City Centre shopping area.
