News release issued: 10th November 2008

With Remembrance Day approaching, HMS Victory  had a very special visitor from Poppy Man, the symbolic representation of the help The Royal British Legion gives to serving and ex-service people and their families.

Poppy Man took time out of his busy schedule to meet with Chief Petty Officer Warren Oates, the whole Ship Co-ordinator to reflect on past and present service men and women in a bid to recruit a ‘new generation’ of 10,000 Poppy Appeal collectors up to  November 11th as it seeks to meet its ambitious £32 million fundraising target.

The Legion hopes to exceed last year’s record sum of £30m raised with a total of £32m in donations toward this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Some 10.5 million serving and ex-Service people and their families are eligible for the Legion’s range of welfare services, which includes grant-making to those in need, pensions and benefits advice, counselling and job retraining, home and hospital visits as well as the provision of full nursing care.

Last year’s record amount reflected the public’s concern for its Armed Forces and recognises the Legion’s work in providing for their welfare needs while campaigning to improve their conditions. You can also text ‘POPPY’ to 80848 to make a £1.50 donation.
