Travel back in time and marvel at the history of some of the world’s most famous naval attractions in Portsmouth and across the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) for the national Heritage Open Days scheme taking place between September 10 and 13.
Visitors will be able to take part in free exclusive tours of attractions into areas not normally accessible to the public and learn all about the fascinating 800-year history of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
See things in a different light during a twilight tour of HMS Alliance and go underneath the submarine to find out how she was built and how she worked alongside our expert submariner guides. Visitors can also head to the multi-award-winning Mary Rose Museum to learn about how artefacts are conserved.
There will be a rare opportunity to get down into a dry dock dating back to 1801, to see underneath the newly-opened First World War survivor, monitor HMS M.33. Visitors can also go below the waterline under all 3,500 tonnes of HMS Victory and view the keel at close range.
Above the surface, people can hear the mysterious tales of Victorian Boathouse 6 and can also go behind the scenes at Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower, Gosport, to see some reserve collections and access buildings not normally open to the public.
All these popular events are part of the national annual Heritage Open Days, where England’s iconic architecture and culture is celebrated by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.
With all the added events, tickets can be purchased to all the attractions which include HMS Warrior 1860, Action Stations, The Mary Rose Museum, HMS Victory, The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Harbour Tours, HMS M.33, Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower and Royal Marines Museum.
