Preliminary Visits

To help with advance planning and preparation we strongly recommend that teachers make a preliminary visit to the Historic Dockyard (free of charge) to complete the required LEA Risk Assessment forms.

Health & Safety

In order to ensure the quality and safety of visits to the site, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has established a full set of codes and guidelines covering all aspects of the business. These include Health & Safety Policies, First Aid Provision and Risk Assessments.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard does not have facilities for storage of lunch boxes  and bags because of security reasons. Hence it is advisable that all luggage is kept to a minimum and that pupils in particular have backpacks so their hands are free for climbing ladders aboard the ships.

It is also recommended that all visitors wear sensible shoes and dress warmly in cold weather.

Lunch Facilities

An indoor eating area is available for Education Groups with packed lunches.  Space in this area is limited and pre-booking is required.  There are also several outdoor and covered picnic areas around the site.

Special Education Needs and Access Provision

If your group has Special Education Needs and access requirements, please advise us when booking so that we can help you to get the best from your visit.  All the attractions are fully or partially wheelchair accessible. The hands-on activities are designed to be inclusive as possible. The Mary Rose has resources for the visually impaired and pupils who use symbols.  Touch tours and handling sessions are also available at the Royal Naval Museum and HMS Warrior 1860.  Wheelchairs, magnifying glasses and large-print text can be arranged in advance.
