Self Guided Discovery Visits

A Discovery Visit is a self-guided visit to any one or a combination of the attractions; Mary Rose, HMS Victory, National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS Warrior 1860, Action Stations. Be inspired by unique historic ships and fascinating museum collections to explore over 800 years of compelling Naval history.

Combine a Discovery Visit with a workshop to further develop learning themes.

Important information about the Mary Rose
The Ship Hall is closed to the public as work continues on building an exciting new museum which will open in 2012. Although the ship is not currently on view, there is a large screen in the museum showing close-up pictures of the hull undergoing conservation. This provides a chance to see unusual and detailed views of the Mary Rose providing a completely new perspective of the ship. Pupils are given a short commentary followed by a Q and A session. In addition, there is an introductory film telling the story of the ship from 1509 to the present day. The current museum has been enhanced with new exhibits on show for the first time including the reconstructed head of the ship's Bosun and the skeleton of Hatch the Carpenter's dog.

Special offer!
Book a second Mary Rose workshop for your class and receive a 50% discount on the price of that activity.

HMS Victory Guided Tours
During our off-peak season guided tours of HMS Victory are available. Led by one of the ship’s guides your class will learn about life on board ship, The Battle of Trafalgar and Lord Nelson. Tours are extremely popular so please book early to avoid disappointment. Combine your tour with a HMS Victory workshop to help develop themes further. Due to space restrictions some workshops may take place at the National Museum of the Royal Navy opposite the ship. You will be advised if this is the case at the time of booking.

Throughout the peak season the ship will offer free flow visits which are self-guided. Spend longer on board and focus on areas of particular interest to your pupils. Guides are on hand to answer any questions and teacher’s guides and activity sheets are available free of charge to assist you. These can be downloaded from www.hms-victory.com. Please contact us on 023 9283 9766 for seasonal dates.
