Winning Joy for the Mary Rose Trust

Joy Critcher, a volunteer at the Mary Rose Trust is the winner of the inaugural South East regional Marsh Award for Museum Learning.

In a fantastic celebration of volunteering last week, Joy attended the award ceremony at The British Museum to collect her prize and certificate. The judges were particularly impressed by the contribution made by Joy and the gathered audience were shown images of her in action in her voluntary work.

"I feel proud to have won the Marsh Award for Museum Education. Even more so because the work I do with the outreach team helps to bring the Mary Rose experience to people who because of diability or social constraint cannot visit us at the Dockyard.

This is the first year of the Marsh Awards which is a collaboration between the British Museum and the Marsh Christian Trust to recognise volunteers in engaging museum audiences. Applications were judged on how they make a difference, how they improve the museum experience for visitors and on positive feedback from visitors and staff. 

Joy was awarded for her work with the Mary Rose Trust outreach programme, which aims to engage with people unable to visit the museum for a variety of reasons. These visits, led by the Community Officer, Trevor Sapey, include Stroke clubs, the visually impaired, hospices, day centres for the elderly and adults and children with learning and physical disabilities.

To hear them laugh and talk, in many case, as they have not done so before, is the reason why I enjoy volunteering to do this work. I have met some amazing people and we have a great time together."

Joy gives up her own time several days a week to meet the demand from these special need groups which have proved very popular and mutually beneficial. This work is in addition to her role as a costumed volunteer guide in the museum on at least two days per week.

Joy helps the Mary Rose Trust to deliver outreach sessions in costume and helps with artefact handling and dressing up. This raises the confidence of many individuals in these groups who often feel excluded from museums. The programme helps the Trust to welcome a more diverse range of visitors.

Joys experience of dealing with a variety of special needs on outreach has also helped her to engage with similar visitors to the museum whilst she is there as a guide. This outreach programme aims to meet individual learning capabilities. It also encourages groups to visit the museum for the first time.

Some of the positive feedback Joy has received included:

"Our clients were diverted from their illness and amused" (Countess Mountbatten Hospice)

"It is difficult to run a session such as this for all abilities but it was brilliant" (Portsea Gateway Award).

The Mary Rose Trust has a thriving volunteer scheme that is going from strength to strength with 50 volunteers.

Hampshire sails into new Mary Rose partnership

Hampshire County Council is contributing £800,000 towards a brand new Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as it invests in the cultural legacy of the County and its future economic prosperity.

The Mary Rose collection is historically unique achieving worldwide recognition from experts and academic institutions. This latest contribution will be matched by fundraising from the Mary Rose Trust towards the £35 million needed to build what is already being named as a centre of excellence for Tudor History.

The new museum will be a major international cultural tourist attraction increasing visitor numbers and adding to the countys £2.3 billion tourism economy. The Museum will help Portsmouth Harbour develop its importance as a cultural destination that will in turn improve the wellbeing and quality of life of Hampshire residents. The museum will also contribute to the regeneration of Gosport and its proud seafaring heritage as it is predicted that visitors to Portsmouth will cross the harbour to visit other naval museums in Gosport and in turn boost local trade.

The new Mary Rose Museum will open in 2012 and provide Hampshire with a world class exhibition space able to preserve this extraordinary ship and all her treasures, for future generations to enjoy. The museum will contain over 14,000 artefacts compared to the 1000 currently on display. It will also house a new learning centre which will quadruple the existing learning space and a new and improved laboratory and workshop facilities.

The whole of Hampshire will benefit from this new partnership as plans for an enhanced learning and community outreach programme will include taking rare artefacts such as seamens footwear, nit combs and beautiful pewter dishes to Council run schools, libraries and museums. The council museum service will also be working with the Trust on preserving and displaying their unique collections.

Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry, said: "This wonderful new museum for the Mary Rose has the potential to play a fantastic role in attracting increased visitor numbers to Portsmouth and Hampshire. Visitors will learn about the history of Hampshire and at the same time contribute to its modern economy. Even in the short term this project will give another boost to the construction industry. We are a naval county and very proud of that part of our heritage. Hampshire is right behind the Mary Rose."

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, President of the Mary Rose Trust, has recently commented on the project: "May I congratulate all those who have been engaged in these activities and who have helped bring the Mary Rose to this stage. There is no doubt, against all odds, success will be achieved and the Nation will gain a sensational and sustainable museum, which will no doubt attract huge admiration worldwide"

John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust, said: "Hampshire County Council has been involved in the Mary Rose project from the day of recovery. The Trust is absolutely thrilled to receive this significant support at a crucial time. Our new museum will be a world leader, attracting countless new visitors. Meanwhile we are very excited by the prospect of strengthening our already very active links across Hampshire in learning and outreach.

"The Heritage Lottery Fund have recently awarded us a £21m grant, describing the Mary Rose as: one of this Countrys most precious icons, but the Trust has to raise £14m in match funding. With this grant from Hampshire County Council, we have now reached 85% of our target."

Dr David Starkey, trustee of the Mary Rose Trust as well as world renowned Tudor/Henry VIII expert said: "Once the Mary Rose was the pride and joy of Henry VIIIs navy, as well as its most innovative and experimental warship. Now, its conserved hull, together with the thousands of objects once on board and the skeletons of scores of its crew, is the most important historical survival of the reign. Its the English Pompeii or Herculaneum, our very own tomb of Tutankhamen.

"So Im delighted that, as we celebrate the five hundred anniversary of Henry VIIIs accession, Hampshire County Council has crowned its long support of the Mary Rose project by a grant of £800,000 towards the building and equipping of the new Mary Rose Museum.

"The Museum, which will be outstanding in terms of its architecture, contents and presentation, will make Hampshire, which is already rich in history, a must visit destination for anyone 14and they number millions 14interested in the life and times of Englands most important and memorable king."

History of the Mary Rose:

The warship the Mary Rose was built in Portsmouth between 1509 and 1511 for King Henry VIII and became the flagship of the British Navy. She served for 34 years before her tragic loss off Portsmouth, when she sank in full view of land with the loss of five hundred lives during a battle with the French.

On 14 May 1966, the first modern dive was made on the wreck site of the Mary Rose. That dive, was the first of many thousands looking for evidence of the wreck and led ultimately to the ship being raised in 1982 and taken to No.3 Drydock for conservation and later display.

While the Mary Rose was being excavated, around 19,000 artefacts were found in the wreck, most of them in an almost miraculous state of preservation. Around 1000 of these artefacts are on display in the current Mary Rose Museum at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Mary Rose Trust jubilant as Heritage Lottery Fund gives green light to new museum

One of the most ambitious and significant heritage projects in recent years has been given the go ahead by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which has given full approval for a £21 million grant to the Mary Rose Trust to complete the conservation of the Tudor warship, the Mary Rose, and build a permanent museum for the ship and the artefacts in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

In addition, the Mary Rose Trust has raised almost £10 million of the final £35 million cost for the museum, which is due to open in 2012 in time for the Olympics. The green light means that the construction of the new museum, located alongside Nelson''s flagship, HMS Victory, can now proceed.

Visitors are being urged to view the hull of the famous warship before she is withdrawn, temporarily, from view in the autumn. The existing Mary Rose Museum will remain open throughout the construction phase and the hull will be interpreted imaginatively within, including a new introductory film, enhanced displays and time lapse photography. Details are now being finalised to launch a public fundraising appeal for the final £4 million next month.

The HLF has been an established supporter of the Mary Rose project, awarding almost £7 million over the last 15 years. The decision to award the £21 million grant finally secures a future for the Mary Rose.

Dame Jenny Abramsky, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund said: "This is excellent news and means restoration work on the Mary Rose can now move up a gear. It''s also a key milestone for the Trust as part of a complex but hugely worthwhile journey to make this ambitious project a reality and enable many more of the ship''s artefacts to be viewed. We''re proud to be playing our part in safeguarding one of the UK''s most precious pieces of maritime heritage."

John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust welcomed the news: "This is indeed great news. The Mary Rose has been described by historian Dr David Starkey as this country''s Pompeii, painting the finest picture of the world of sixteenth century life. The HLF has today demonstrated their real commitment to the nation''s heritage and ensured this truly unique ship and collection remains forever. When better to celebrate than during the month which marks the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII''s accession we think he would be delighted!"

"The Mary Rose features highly on an international stage; the new museum will attract visitors from all over the world and our learning programme inspires children, students and community groups of all ages and abilities. Our call now is for people to help with the final push towards funding when we launch our fundraising appeal and to make sure that they visit the ship hall before the autumn if they''ve never had the chance to see the hull, before she''s withdrawn temporarily."

The new museum, designed by a team comprising Wilkinson Eyre Architects (architect), Pringle Brandon (interior design) and Land Design Studio (exhibition design and interpretation, in collaboration with Gifford (structural and M&E engineer,) will reunite the ship''s preserved hull with many thousands of artefacts unseen for over 500 years and enhance Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as a major visitor destination.

The hull of the Mary Rose will continue to be sprayed with polyethylene glycol, a water based wax solution, behind closed doors, until April 2011. The new museum being built around her will be opened in 2012 and the hull will be carefully dried within the new museum until she can be displayed fully in 2016, when visitors will be able to walk through the display containing the Mary Rose.

Dates: 29th June 5th July, 2009 Boathouse 7

Visitors to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will be able to see how the Naval Base was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, when a temporary poster exhibition on the Block Mills, the worlds first mass production factory, will be on display in Boathouse 7 from 29th June 5th July 2009. The exhibition is financially sponsored by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, owner of Boathouse 7.

The Portsmouth Panopticon uses the Block Mills as an example of a school of thought emerging at the start of the 19th century.

The Block Mills (1803) became the worlds first complete steam powered factory with block making machinery that was essential to supply the fleet. At the time the country was at war with France against a backdrop of emerging industrialisation.

PhD student Katariina Mauranen considers the impact this had on the dockyard workforce.

The exhibition will look at the reforms introduced into Portsmouth Dockyard by Sir Samuel Bentham, brother of Jeremy Bentham, who originated the Panopticon theory. Famous for its application to a prison design, the principle was that an observer could monitor workers unseen. In essence, the workers became part of the machine.

The exhibition will also complement the Dockyard Apprentice exhibition, also on display in Boathouse 7, where some of the Block Mills machines are currently displayed.

It is aimed at an audience of adults and age 14+ students with an interest in maritime, naval and social history.

Katariina Mauranen, a former student of Portsmouth University, commented: "Before starting my PhD I worked at the Royal Naval Museum for a short time, so it''s great to come back here with my own exhibition. I''m especially glad to be displaying Block Mills history so near the original setting."

Showcasing the Block Mills as the start of the Navys industrial revolution and as a feature unique to Portsmouth will be a good introduction to the tours around the Block Mills on Heritage Open Days. These tours will take place on the 12th & 13th September and must be pre booked. Please contact Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for further details (023 9289 4550).

Katariina Mauranens PhD thesis is for Imperial College London, in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and curators from Portsmouth City Museum and the Science Museum, exploring the possibilities of making academic history more accessible to the public through museum exhibitions. She is a former student of the University of Portsmouth, graduating with an MSc Heritage and Museum Studies in 2004. She is grateful to Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust for supporting the exhibition financially and for the valuable advice received from Brian Patterson (Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust Historian & Boatkeeper).

Ground breaking science study programme gets support with three year grant for the Mary Rose Trust

From the world of Henry VIII to a world not normally seen under the sea young scientists and engineers of the future could soon be discovering the excitement behind science, as The Mary Rose Trust announces support from the Lloyds Register Educational Trust in a ground breaking education programme.

The three year £600k grant will support an innovative range of science activities for children and young people aged 7 18 and take science and education way beyond the reach of other museums. Sessions for children with special needs will also be an important part of the project.

The project links science in the world of work to the National Curriculum. It allows students to use high tech equipment both at the museum teaching laboratory and remotely in school, something rarely available even to undergraduates. The learning doesnt stop there though as there will also be a range of web based activities through the creation of a virtual science laboratory. This facility will be available to both a national and world wide audience.

Furthermore they will be offered challenging opportunities to use the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and CyberMARINE seabed data loggers through an internet connection. This is an exciting development in the field of distance learning, taking museum education beyond the traditional walls and locating to a learning space on the web with the use of remote instruments.

The microscopy and underwater data loggers are test cases and tools that will transport children and young people into a world that cannot be seen with the naked eye or without SCUBA equipment. Schools will be able to book sessions to use the SEM and CyberMARINE equipment but these sessions will be free of charge.

Michael Franklin, Director of the LRET, said:

"The LRET looks for outstanding organisations that work with young people to show them how exciting, worthwhile and rewarding science and engineering are. The Mary Rose and its many unique artefacts open up valuable scientific insights and that is why we have decided to fund the Mary Rose Trust''s science teaching programme for schoolchildren. With a focus on the hull itself and also by making innovative use of the internet, this programme will motivate youngsters in the UK and elsewhere to study science through school and university and, eventually, to make it their career."

The project seeks to extend the National Curriculum by promoting out of the box science teaching to young learners. A key criterion of the curriculum is to help young people trace the development of science worldwide and recognise its cultural significance and this should not be restricted to activities taking place solely within the laboratory or classroom. The Mary Rose Trust will encourage the excitement of not just learning but experiencing science.

The Mary Rose collection (hull and artefacts) also lends itself extremely well to cross curricular teaching from a science and engineering core. Maths, IT, design technology, history and geography are all closely linked to the project.

John Lippiett, Chief Executive of the Mary Rose Trust, said:

"Learning is at the very heart of this Trusts activities and we have recently been putting more and more emphasis on the scientific aspects of our work. Providing support and encouragement for teachers is integral to the work of the Trust and we will be working with external partners to provide a service to schools and colleges which will reach pupils of all abilities. Thanks to the Lloyds Register Educational Trust, we can make a great leap forward in what we can offer."

HMS Victory remains the most famous warship in the world and had an illustrious career, culminating in leading the fleet to victory at Trafalgar. Her keel was laid in 1759, the year commonly dubbed Annus Mirabilis or wonderful year because <st1:country region w:st="on">Britain</st1:country region> won a remarkable series of victories, the greatest of which was Wolfes capture of Quebec. It is likely this is why she is named Victory.

Upon receipt of this warrant, work began on the ship that was to become HMS Victory.

According to a report it was a "bright and sunny day". Timber for constructing a first rate ship had been placed in store to season some 14 years before. It is very probable that the long seasoning time greatly contributed to the ship's eventual longevity.

HMS Warrior 1860 Is Looking After Her Figure For Summer

As all Great Britons prepare to get their figures ship shape for the summer, the nations stately dame, HMS Warrior 1860, is no exception as her figurehead is undergoing refurbishment.

Work is taking place to ensure this fine figurehead is looked after but it is no easy task due to the very unusual nature of the job it has even taken a whole week to erect the scaffolding.

This was followed by the washing, rubbing down and painting of the figurehead, undertaken by Dave Bishop and Peter (Shiner) Wright (both Warrior employees) who were assisted by John Coughtrie (Warrior volunteer). This work has taken 8 days to complete.

Since then Fez Parker has been re gilding the figurehead it is a very skilled and painstaking task which is now approaching completion. Depending on the weather, gilding work should finish next week and then all that remains is the removal of the scaffolding.

Fez has been involved in previous refurbishment of HMS Warrior 1860 and it was always an ambition of his to re gild the figurehead and now he has achieved his magnificent mission he feels his work is done and he will now look at the ship with pride into his retirement.

Those who have viewed the figurehead from the platform are most impressed with the detailed carving even, for example, behind the Warriors shield which is not seen (see attached image).

The figurehead we see today is the third one, all to the same design, that Warrior has had during her lifetime. The powerful Warrior was one of the last battleships to carry a figurehead; the original one was made in Portsmouth at a cost of £60 but was sadly lost in 1868 when Warrior accidentally collided with HMS Royal Oak. The collision was with such a force that the figureheads head fell off to be claimed as a prize by the midshipmen on Royal Oaks quarterdeck.

Using original sketches and photographs the present version was carved by Jack Whitehead and Norman Gaches in Cowes in the early 1980s. It was put on display at the 1983 International Boat Show in London and appeared on Blue Peter then, in August, Warriors figurehead was brought to Portsmouth Dockyard and positioned outside No.5 Boathouse only a few yards from the site vacated by its predecessor 65 years previously. From that moment Warriors presence in Portsmouth was re established.

Navyss Summer Extravaganza Draws Big Crowds

Around 35,000 visitors flocked to a sun drenched Portsmouth Naval Base for the three day Meet Your Navy extravaganza which ended on Sunday.

Organisers say the wide variety of attractions and displays plus the fine weather combined to make the event such a success.

Eleven Royal Navy ships including aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious were open to the public along with foreign navy vessels from Japan, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, and France.

As well seeing the present day Royal Navy, visitors were taken back in time with historical drill and musket firing displays and even demonstrations of tudor cooking in the Mary Rose replica galley.

And a glimpse to the future was also on offer in an exhibition featuring the Navys new Type 45 destroyers and aircraft carriers.

The many arena displays also proved a hit including Royal Marines from 40 Commando showing how to rescue a VIP. In a closely fought field gun contest over the three days the Portsmouth Naval Base crew proved victorious, narrowly beating HMS Sultan from Gosport by an aggregate time of 13 seconds.

On the water the harbour displays also proved popular with crowds lining ships decks to see a fast roping assault by 40 Commando Royal Marines and a search and rescue demonstration by the Royal navys 771 Squadron.

Naval Base Commander, Commodore David Steel, said: "Meet Your Navy has been a big success. The warm and sunny weather played a part but a big draw was seeing the Royal Navys ships and personnel at close hand. The event proved an exciting opportunity to show the general public the wide role of the Royal Navy and what its men and women are up to across the globe. The visitors showed a lot of interest in the role of the future Navy, in particular the new Type 45 destroyers and aircraft carriers all to be based in Portsmouth."

Robert Bruce, Managing Director of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which jointly staged the event with the Naval Base, added: "Weve been lucky with the weather but we were also pleased that the scale and variety of displays proved so popular.

"This was the operational navy and historic dockyard working together and the public were able to see how those two aspects of the Navy complement each other. It was not just about modern warships all the historic attractions had many more visitors than is normal, even on a busy summers weekend.

"Meet Your Navy was the largest and most spectacular event in the Naval Base since Trafalgar 200 three years ago and we are delighted with the response from the public."

Pompey Expects!

The unlikely alliance of two major events the FA Cup and the Battle of Trafalgar was famously captured by the Portsmouth News as an innovative image on their front page on Saturday 17th May, the same day that Harry Redknapp marched his team to glory in the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

The Royal Naval Museum gratefully received a world famous painting of the re enactment of the Battle of Trafalgar, a perfect example of Nelson in the 21st Century.

Editor of The News Mark Waldron presented the famous image of William Overends The Hero of Trafalgar infused with the faces of Portsmouth Football Team to Colin White, Director of the Royal Naval Museum on Thursday 17th July.

Colin White agrees this is a unique piece of art: "Nelson called the captains who served with him at the Battle of Copenhagen, "a very distinguished set of fine fellows". That is the way that all of us here at the Royal Naval Museum feel about the Pompey squad after their splendid victory. So we are delighted that a painting from our collection is being used to celebrate their success. I am sure that Nelson would have approved!"

The print has had a powerful impact on Portsmouth and has already sold thousands of copies. It is due to be displayed in the Nelson Gallery section of the Royal Naval Museum.

Historic Dockyard welcomes visiting Anglican Bishops

Anglican Bishops from Ghana and the United States will be given a special tour of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The tour is part of their 5 day stay in the Diocese.

During their afternoon visit on July 15th, they will enjoy lunch in the Captains cabin onboard HMS Warrior 1860 and then tour both Warrior and HMS Victory.

Of particular interest will be the Chasing Freedom exhibition at the Royal Naval Museum which gives an insight into the role of the Royal Navys West Africa squadron during their campaign to enforce the abolition of the slave trade just over two hundred years ago.

The 11 bishops and their spouses, who are being hosted by Portsmouths Anglican diocese from July 11th 16th, attended a special day in Portsmouth Cathedral on Saturday (July 12th), joined in with worship at churches across the diocese on Sunday (July 13th) and visited the Isle of Wight on Monday (July 14th).

On Tuesday (July 15), they will hear about Sir Henry Leeke, who was in command of the Myrmidon in 1822, policing the waters of the Gulf of Guinea, when the ship captured a Portuguese slave vessel. On board the slave ship was a young boy called Adjai who had been kidnapped along with his mother and sister and sold to the Portuguese to be transported across the Transatlantic.

Sir Henry freed the Africans on the Portuguese vessel and placed them on board his own ship, and after a further two months sail, he set them free at Freetown, Sierra Leone, a settlement for liberated Africans.

Adjai later became Samuel Adjai Crowther , the first African Bishop ordained into the Anglican Church, and Bishop of Niger. Sir Henry was one of the guests at Crowthers ordination in 1864, over forty years after they first met.

By 1865 nearly 150,000 enslaved Africans had been freed through anti slavery operations by the Royal Navy and many sailors had given their lives to end their suffering. Boarding disease ridden slave ships posed dangerous risks of infection and the unfamiliar climate was similarly unhealthy. Many sailors died from the tropical diseases common on the squadron, including dysentery, yellow fever and malaria.

I think one of the most disturbing things I found during the research was how its thought more sailors and soldiers have taken their own lives since the conflict, as died during it. The Falklands Veterans Foundations in the process of raising funds to build and maintain a house on the islands. This aims to allow them to try and lay their demons to rest. I hope my programme honours what they did, and that this award acts as a tribute to our Falklands heroes."

The Historic Dockyard car park on Queens Street will also be open for supporters.

Model boat displays at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard embody Britains maritime history

Following the success of the inaugural Model Boat Weekend last year, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will once again play host to a fasinating display of model boats.

Dating from the days of the nineteenth century West African Squadron to the Falklands Conflict, model boats will be on display on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August from 10am 4.30pm.

This year will see the addition of exhibitors trading model boat making supplies and traders include Model Power, SHG Marine and Max Mouldings. There will also be a new display of a fascinating matchstick fleet display, consisting of two hundred model warships made from only matchsticks and wooden matchboxes representing almost every major class of warship in service with the World Navies since 1945.

Throughout the weekend there will be performances on the historical Mast Pond by Portsmouth Powerboat Club, the Surface Warship Association and Portsmouth Model Boat Club. Adjacent to the Mast Pond in Boathouse 4 there will be a small display pool for smaller model boat demonstrations.

The Mast Pond, a key archaeological feature of the dockyard dating back to 1665, is a perfect setting for a display of this kind as it carries its own history, having played many roles in the working dockyard at a time when it was the world centre for mast making.

The Model Boat Weekend will take place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August from 10am 4.30pm and is a free event.

Rare Mary Rose sword goes on display

Twenty five years after it was retrieved from the bed of the Solent from the Mary Rose, a rare 16th century basket hilted sword has been put on display for the first time.

The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councillor Mike Blake officially opened the display of the basket hilted sword, arguably one of the most important in the world because it can be dated precisely to the sinking of the ship, on July 19th 1545. It pre dates by a hundred years the only other two with firm dates attached to them. Curator of Ordnance Alex Hildred and former Research Director Dr Margaret Rule were on hand to pay testimony to the importance of the find.

The sword, which measures 105cm in length, was recovered in September 1982, just one month before the momentous lifting of the hull of the Mary Rose. The sword had fallen through a gun port as the ship sank and then was buried beneath the hull as it settled into the seabed.

Although the sword has never been on display before, photographs and drawings of it have excited military historians worldwide. Guy Wilson, ex Master of the Royal Armouries, has written of the sword "It is one of a very important type that may be called the first British Military pattern sword as it appears to have been used extensively by the elite troops and personal guard of King Henry VIII."

Of the many thousands of Tudor artefacts retrieved from the wreck, the sword is unique as every other metal edged weapon was almost completely destroyed underwater leaving only the wooden parts or just a few fragments of metal trapped within concretions. The handle is wood, either beech or alder; the blade is made of iron with steel cutting edges and the basket hilt is made from quarter inch iron rods hammer welded together.

John Lippiett, Chief Executive of The Mary Rose Trust explains: "Even after 437 years in the sea, the sword is still wonderfully balanced and the edge of the blade near the hilt is sharp enough to cut. Once again the Mary Rose has yielded another unique Tudor treasure."

Conservation of the sword started in 1983 with initial removal of chlorides present in the sea water. Removal of the remaining chlorides by electrolysis was commenced under the supervision of Dr Mark Jones, Head of Collections at the Mary Rose Trust. The final stage of conservation was the dehydration of the sword and treatment of the wooden hilt.

The display of the sword is the first event to mark the 25th anniversary of the raising of the Mary Rose on October 11th.

Joint statement on proposed Portsmouth Football Club development

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT BY PORTSMOUTH NAVAL BASE PROPERTY TRUST AND PORTSMOUTH HISTORIC DOCKYARD LTD

The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard ship and museum trusts welcome the concept of some sort of development to regenerate the area between Gunwharf Quays and the Dockyard, which is at present a run down and neglected part of the existing urban landscape. The Property Trust in particular has long been campaigning for a direct waterside link between Gunwharf and the Dockyard to help cross the barrier created by Portsmouth Harbour railway station and the Hard Interchange.

The Trusts are not convinced that PFCs proposal addresses this need, although they recognize that it is a bold initiative. Any development needs to retain views of the harbour from the Hard and allow sufficient elbow room between it and the Historic Dockyard entrance.

Sir Colin Stansfield Smith, RIBA Gold Medal winner, former Hampshire County Architect and now a trustee of Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust, said: The coastline becomes increasingly precious for a city like Portsmouth which has, through its unique history and heritage, found a pride in itself. The Romans always built their stadia outside the city walls, invariably because of the problems of having huge numbers people in one place, and in Portsmouth the coastline is our city wall.

At present there is significant concern about accessibility to this part of the city, particularly on match days. Traffic congestion is already a challenge for both the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays, the needs of whose visitors must be considered on match days, as well as those of the football supporters. Reassurance is also required that the proposed scale and massing of the development will not dwarf or overshadow the Historic Dockyard.

PFCs developer, Sellar Property Group, has not yet suggested a viable alternative location for HMS Warrior, which could not occupy the space currently proposed for technical reasons. She needs to be positioned where she can continue to mark the entrance to the Historic Dockyard with the status and dignity she deserves.

The trusts now need to evaluate the economic, social and environmental impact of the stadium proposal on the Historic Dockyard as a whole. The Property Trusts plans for Boathouse 4, the large 1930s building just inside Victory Gate, depended on maximizing panoramic views of the harbour but these have now had to be shelved as a result of the stadium announcement just two weeks before those plans were due to be marketed. While it might be possible for Boathouse 4 and surrounding buildings to be developed as part of the stadium proposal, it remains to be seen whether this would have any beneficial effect on the future economy of the Historic Dockyard.

The Property Trust and Warrior Preservation Trust have attended initial briefings by PFC and Sellar Property Group. Sellar has agreed to fund economic, social and environmental studies to assess the impact of the residential and stadium development on the Historic Dockyard. Meanwhile, it has been suggested that the developer should address the issues of berthing HMS Warrior and moving the entire development further south to incorporate the railway station as well as the Hard Interchange.

A response to these suggestions from PFC and Sellar Property Group is currently awaited, along with confirmation that the economic, social and environmental studies (terms of reference for which have been agreed) will be commissioned as soon as possible. The studies will be undertaken by the University of Portsmouth and tourism consultants Britton McGrath Associates.

Mary Rose Trust submits new bid to Heritage Lottery Fund

Staff from the Mary Rose Trust have completed their detailed work on a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a major grant of £21 million to complete the conservation of the ship and her contents, and to build a new museum to house them. The application was delivered to the HLF at the end of June.

The bid is the result of a huge amount of work which went back to the basics of why the Mary Rose is so significant and what it is the Trust must do to display the ship and its collection to the full advantage of the public.

Since the disappointing news a year ago that their earlier bid did not fully satisfy the HLF Trustees, the Mary Rose team have heeded all the constructive advice they have received from the HLF and have considerably improved the planned exhibition and enlarged the learning facilities that will be at the heart of the Trusts activities. The vision has been refined and is now: To create a sensational and sustainable museum in which the Mary Rose and her artefacts tell their unique stories. The Trust firmly believes that the resulting plans are exceptionally exciting.

The design of the museum building, to be built over the dry dock in which the ship sits, remains largely the same as before, but the concept for interpretation of the exhibition has changed considerably.

The display will be based on the moment in time just before the ship sank in 1545. This unique time capsule will show some 14,000 stunning objects close to the position where they were found in the ship. They will be displayed to tell the stories of the individuals who owned them; the admiral, the sailor, the cook, the pilot, the barber surgeon, the archer, the carpenter. Their personal and professional belongings will be brought together for the first time for us to understand how they lived and worked onboard. As the eminent Tudor historian, Dr David Starkey recently said: "The Mary Rose is the English Pompeii, preserved by water not fire. All Tudor life is there; it is like stepping inside a Holbein painting".

The new museum is at the forefront of the plans to improve Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (PHD) as a large visitor attraction. The Historic Dockyard already attracts around half a million visitors a year to its celebrated collection of historic ships and museums including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860 and the Royal Naval Museum. It is expected that not only will this number increase but new audiences will come for the first time. Much work has been done to research how this can be achieved and the new museum will engage with members of the local community far more closely.

Learning and education is at the heart of the Mary Rose Trusts activities and all ages will be catered for. The space for accommodating schools and groups will be quadrupled to meet the ever growing demand to join the highly popular programmes that cover both heritage and science. At long last the Trust will have the necessary facilities to look after their visitors.

The overall project covers the completion of the conservation, the building and fitting out of the museum, the repair of the dry dock and the landscaping of the arena between HMS Victory and the museum. It will cost £35 million and building work is expected to commence in 2009. The aim is to open the new museum by the end of 2011, which is the 500th anniversary of the ships maiden voyage.

John Lippiett, the Chief Executive of the Trust said: "We have been working very closely with the Heritage Lottery Fund over the last year to address all the issues they raised last time. We are confident we have a first class bid that will provide a museum of national and international importance. Furthermore, the end of the conservation programme will at last be reached."

The HLF is currently assisting the funding of the second phase of conservation and has contributed to both research and the costs of the preparation of this new bid. John Lippiett added: "Without HLF support in the past, there would be no Mary Rose today. We receive no core government funding so we are very dependent on this fund. The new museum will make the Trust fully self sustaining, so it is vital that we complete our project in this timescale".

The Mary Rose Trust will hear in mid January 2008 whether or not the first stage pass has been approved by HLF Trustees. They will then have a year to develop the plans still further before final approval is forthcoming. Meanwhile the Trust is pressing ahead with its plans to raise £14 million as its expected share of the costs.

BIRTHDAY LUNCH FOR VETERAN IN HMS VICTORY

The oldest Royal Navy veteran and member of the WW1 Royal Naval Air Service(RNAS) Mr Henry Allingham is to celebrate his 111th birthday on board HMS Victory at Portsmouth on Wednesday, June 6.

Mr Allingham was present at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and became a founder member of the Royal Air Force when it was formed from the RNAS and the Armys Royal Flying Corps in 1918.

It is planned that at HMS Victory Mr Allingham will be serenaded by a Royal Marines Band before witnessing a flypast by aircraft of the Royal Navys Historic Flight as well as by current aircraft of the RAF.

HMS Victory is the flagship of Vice Admiral Adrian Johns, Commander in Chief Naval Home Command and Second Sea Lord, and Mr Allingham will join the admiral and a small number of friends and guests including MOD Veterans Minister Mr Derek Twigg for lunch in the ships Great Cabin.
