Sea Your History: 20th Century Royal Navy

Sea Your History: 20th Century Royal Navy at the Royal Naval Museum

Open daily from 10am

Sea Your History is a special exhibition focusing on the real experiences of the Navys people in combat and under stress, doing their day to day work, at rest and play, at home and abroad, at sea and on land during a century of almost continuous conflict and rapid technological and social change.

The exhibition will include colourful, surprising and often touchingly intimate items of both official and personal material selected from the collections of the Royal Naval Museum, the Fleet Air Arm Museum, the Royal Marines Museum and the Royal Navy Submarine Museum.

The exhibition is part of a larger project to make the Museums 20th century collections available to the public via a new website, www.seayourhistory.org.uk. Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to explore this website.

Supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is a joint effort by the four museums, Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust and the Mary Rose Trust.

'Halfords Help for Heroes Bike Ride Cycling Challenge'

Starts May 26 2008

Cycle challenge from HMS Victory, across the channel to Caen travelling through northern France and returning to London.

The cycle ride will take place between 26 May to 1 June, tracing some of the regions most significant WW1 & WW2 battle sites, including the Normandy landing beaches and Thiepval on the Somme.

This will be a great physical challenge ending with a cycle through central London past the Cenotaph and onto Horse Guards.

Join Henry VIII and his court for an evening of Tudor revelry. Take part in dancing, juggling, archery and Tudor games. Try on Tudor costumes. Learn cording and spinning. Listen to the bell ringers. Sample the many foods and beers to be found in the merchant stalls. Costumed guides are available for tours of the Mary Rose Museum. Visit the Three Fishes bar. Sit down to a feast of meats, salads, fish, breads, cheeses and fruits, all washed down with a glass of wine or beer.

The Rowans Hospice Moonlit Memories Walk

An exciting, 12 mile, night time walk setting off from Southsea Common, this will be a fantastic opportunity to appreciate the night time magic of the city and support The Rowans Hospice. Stop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard where HMS Victory will be specially lit up & Boathouse 7 will be open providing refreshments for all those friends and family who are not participating but wish to support the walkers, giving them a wonderful opportunity to visit the Naval Base at night.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard joins with the Royal Navy to showcase its past, present and future. Visitors will have the opportunity to board modern ships, meet the crews and see the Royal Navy up close.

Bringing the history of the Royal Navy alive, there will be red coated, 1830s Royal Marines, D Day and Falklands War forces and sailors from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Meet them alongside the dockyard's world famous historic ships, HMS Victory, Mary Rose and HMS Warrior 1860. Explore the Royal Navy further at the Royal Naval Museum and Action Stations. Add the Historic Dockyards magnificent building and docks and visitors have all the ingredients for a great day out.

Dynamic air, land and sea rescue displays and performances of military display teams, Field Gun Crew and a Royal Marines Band will entertain the visitors throughout the weekend.

Visitors of all ages can explore and meet the crews of a Royal Navy aircraft carrier, a submarine hunting frigate, destroyers, a minehunter, high speed patrol craft, assault landing craft, fishery protection patrol craft and warships of visiting foreign navies from around the world.

The future of the Royal Navy will be represented with images and information of the new, big Daring class destroyers and the new aircraft carriers, the biggest warships Britain has ever possessed.

Stories of Ships and the Sea

on board HMS Victory

Join us for a special storytelling event celebrating the National Year of Reading. You will discover traditional tales of the sea and enjoy readings from poems and stories as well as exploring the ship and objects which will help bring them to life!

Tickets cost �6 each & includes refreshments

Places must be booked in advance. All children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

Voyage East: Lantern procession & Fireworks

Friday 31 October: procession starts in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard at 6pm

As the year draws to a close The Emperor and the Burrokeets will return to Gunwharf Quays, and proudly lead a beautiful lantern procession to the waterfront for a spectacular fireworks finale produced by Walk The Plank on Friday 31st October . Visitors can join in the workshops to create their own bespoke papercut lantern and be part of the dramatic illuminated procession from Monday 27th.
