'Heritage Open Days at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard '

We invite you to go behind the scenes of the Historic Dockyard, as we reveal the many treasures and stories as part of 'Heritage Open Days'

Visitors will be able to explore some of the world-famous attractions, take guided tours into areas not normally accessible to the public and learn all about the fascinating 800 year history of the dockyard.

These popular events are part of the national annual Heritage Open Days, where England's fantastic architecture and culture is celebrated by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission.

Thursday 12 – Sunday 15 September
10:30am - 4pm
Beyond the Walls of Portsmouth Naval Base - advanced booking for this tour will close at 4pm on the 11/09/13. All remaining tours will be available on the day on a first come first served basis from the Visitor Centre.

Tour times are every 30 minutes.
Thursday: 10:30am – 3pm
Friday: 10:30am – 3pm
Saturday: 10:30am – 4pm
Sunday: 10:30am – 4pm
Take a vintage bus tour beyond the walls of Portsmouth Naval Base seeing various points of interest.
The tour will last approximately 20 minutes, photography is not permitted.

Tour of Boathouse No.6 (Action Stations)
Enjoy a detailed and informative tour looking at the fascinating history of Boathouse No. 6 from the construction of the building up to the present day.
All tours are FREE but must be booked in advance and there are only 25 spaces per tour. Note that only 4 spaces can be booked per booking. Some areas within the tour are not accessible by a lift. Tour length is approximately 2 hours.

Below HMS Victory’s Waterline - NOW SOLD OUT
Join one of HMS Victory’s tour guides for a unique chance to go below the water line. Walk under 3500 tonnes of ship and view Victory’s keel at close range for a completely different perspective of the ship. . Please note – this does not include a tour of the interior of HMS Victory.

M33 - NOW SOLD OUT
The National Museum of the Royal Navy is offering a rare opportunity to get on board the First World War Monitor M33 - one of only two Royal Navy ships which survive from the War. Built on the orders of Winston Churchill in 1915 the ship is a veteran of the Dardanelles Campaign and of the Russian Civil War. As the National Museum of the Royal Navy and HCC develop exciting plans to open the ship in 2015 this is the chance to get below decks and see more of this unique, purpose-designed ship.
All tours are FREE but must be booked in advance and there are 5 places per tour. Note that only 4 spaces can be booked per booking. No under 14s are permitted on this tour due to health and safety reasons. Sensible, enclosed footwear is to be worn and a hard hat will be provided.

A Visit to the Chain Test House - NOW SOLD OUT
Take a walk around the Mary Rose Conservation Centre where you will get a chance to see the large freeze dryers and humidity chambers. There will also be a chance to see the large tanks that are still conserving one of the Mary Rose anchors and bilge pump.

Tour of Boathouse No.4 - NOW SOLD OUT
Learn about the fascinating history of the Boathouse from secret World War II preparations to its present day use as site for restoration of our historic boat collection. Learn about our boats and watch our volunteers working on their conservation.
All tours are FREE but must be booked in advance and there are only 10 places per tour. Maximum of 1 child per adult, adults must supervise children at all times. Note that only 4 spaces can be booked per booking. Sensible, enclosed footwear must be worn due to the tour location.
